Communities are not just made up of homes and apartments. Many communities have businesses that provide jobs and other services to those communities. Major cities have businesses that are heavily integrated into their communities and so do some smaller cities and even towns. It’s imperative that businesses understand their communities and it is equally important that communities and emergency management leaders from those communities understand those businesses. In this episode, we interview Mark Gillan who is an emergency management expert and keynote speaker. We discuss the following:
- Community emergency management
- Integrating business preparedness with community response planning
- Examples of a poorly managed emergencies
- Examples of an emergency handled with strong leadership and communications
- Importance of joint drills and exercises between community and businesses
- The future of emergency / crisis management technology

Hi Rob,
Enjoyed your Podcast session with Mark. Irrespective of borders we all seem to face similar challenges. It was comforting to hear that our integrated approach to emergency management and business resilience are similar. I have been surprised that many large organisations in Australia, who have faced adversity, failed to take the opportunity to capitalise on communication as a crisis management tool. There is a definite belief that avoidance of communication is a strategy that may assist in future litigation. Of course we all know that if media organisations for instance are provided with appropriate access to information they can be our friends. Treat them poorly and they will definitely be our enemy. Where organisations have engaged in communications, there are many examples of how they enter the blame game or fail to show empathy towards the community. We run a small emergency exercise organisation in Australia, so I am interested in maintaining a watch on your business. Regards Barry
